Saudi are going to do what?

So the Saudis have said that if the United States leaves, then they will begin openly funding the Sunni insurgents.

Yippee.

They can't lift a single ever-so-aristocratic finger to help Iraq, possibly by forgiving the huge amount of debt that they hold from the 1980s. But they can help stir up the situation and keep it chaotic.

The problem is that the Saudis believe they can do this with impunity, and the violence will not spill over to Saudi soil. The Iranians will not strike Saudi assets in the Gulf, nor arm the Saudi Shia minority to the level that they could cause problems for the Sauds, nor will Iranian armies take a hike around Kuwait and actually invade Saudi Arabia.

They believe that this magical immunity is because the United States can't afford to let anything really bad happen to them.

Does anyone with a grip on US domestic politics actually believe that, having withdrawn from Iraq, we would deploy so much as a rowboat to help the Saudis? Might be good for them to get kicked in the teeth, hard, by the Iranians.

As for me, I'm going to start hoarding oil.

My thought is, how much are they secretly giving to the Sunnis now?

Do you really think the Iranians will bother? They can nuke strike the nuclear desalinization plant, and return that country to its bedouin roots in an afternoon.

I still highly recommend a Yamaha Majesty as a good compromise bike....Great gas mileage, able to move and get on and off freeways...able to carry good stuff...like groceries and laptops....and big enough to attach a trailer or sidecar if necessary...

On a completely unrelated note ... I'm thinking of sending you the movie or book about the German version of Mr 1-star PITA.

I emailed the better half of you about it, but haven't received your Feldpostnummer yet. Other question: are PAL VHS video tapes of any use to you at all?

Jen has the email address[es] I read more regularly than cmad@...

Instead of under the table, they will do it over the table.

Would be interesting.

I think the IDF would go absolutely nuts.

As you noted, the Saudis seem to think we'll bail them out whatever they do. Personally, I think we should send a sizeable enough force in to clean the lot of them out. I doubt that will happen.

I think U.S. foreign policy would be utterly paralized. Half of State would demand we send all the MEFs to help the Saudis. A large portion of the DoD would want to send the Air Force in to finish them off, followed by the Marines to hold it and paint lines on the new parking lots.

The Egyptians would spaz completely because a hell of a lot of Saudis would be making tracks for Egypt as quickly as they could.

And, of course, whatever government France has at the time would be busy appeasing both sides.
